Wedding guest style is dictated by three factors.
- Dress code as indicated in the invitation;
- The weather, and;
- Current season trends.
My wedding was in the winter although it was unseasonably warm in December 2014, Thank God! lol. Our dress code was semi-formal so no tuxes and long gowns but no jeans and t-shirt either. And because it was winter time there weren't too many sleeveless dresses.
A springtime wedding means that as a guest almost any silhouette, fabric, style and cut is available to you as a guest.
Elle has a great guide to springtime wedding guest fashion here.
However, it can be tough deciphering what all the dress codes mean exactly.
So what are the dress codes anyway?
For weddings the most common dress codes are White Tie, Black Tie, Formal, Semi-formal, Dressy Casual, and Casual. Their descriptions are listed below.
White Tie - Floor Length Gown, Long Gloves Optional
Black Tie - Floor Length Gown, Dressy Cocktail Dress
Formal - A little black dress, Cocktail Dress, or Dressy Separates
Semi-Formal - Short or Cocktail dress, LBD, Dressy Separates
Dressy Casual - Dress, Skirt, Pants or Jeans and Dressy Top
Causal - Free for all, just don't look homeless
At the end of the day, play it safe. Follow the lead of the hostess. If you know that its a classy affair dress accordingly. The waters can get murky in the formal, semi-formal and dressy casual spaces but if all else fails wear a nice dress black dress and avoid white like the plague unless you are Beyonce.
