Happy Shoesday Tuesday where in the month of October every day is Shoesday!!!!!
Today I wanted to share with you my first memory of shoes. Of course it involves my grandmother who was the most loving person. She died many years ago but this memory is still as vivid as the day it was created.
I was a little girl, maybe 7. My sister and I spent summers in my grandmother's brownstone in Brooklyn. Her room was so amazing to me as a child. She had chest of drawers and a vanity with a chair, and all these beautiful figures from her travels. I especially loved her dutch blue painted pieces and her Limacol which smelled amazing.
I had been in this room many times but for whatever reason on this day I found myself playing with my grandmother's shoes. They were a pair of chocolate brown suede pumps with tassels on the front. I immediately fell in love. They were good quality, well made. I thought to myself, I want a pair of these. So I tried them on. Of course I could barely walk in them. Lol.
When my grandmother came in the room and saw me wearing the shoes I thought I was gonna get in trouble because my grandmother was a lady of order. I knew how to set a full table by the age of 5 and she was a stickler for good posture, tidiness and manners. Instead she walked over to the closet and took down a pair of black suede pumps that were similar to the brown ones to show me.
I was in awe, who had more than one pair of pretty shoes? In my house as a kid I had two pairs of shoes, a church pair and sneakers. Let me know if you can relate in the comments. I made my mind on that day that when I go older I would have 2 pairs of pretty shoes also. Who knew that would turn into over 50 pairs? Lol.
That day my love of shoes was born.
When I was 13 my mom finally let me buy a pair of heels. I must have been begging since I was eleven. The first pair I bought were a leather pair of chocolate brown heels with a tassel. They weren't quite like my grandmothers (they were from Payless after all) but it made me feel like I had a piece of her with me. I wore them shoes until I couldn't fit them anymore. Oh to be a size 5 again.
I have many stories of times with my grandmother but this is by far my favorite. When did you fall in love with shoes? Let me know in the comments!
Happy Shopping!
