Focus on Your Treasures

Nov 25, 2020 0 comments

Happy Thanksgiving Eve!

As you are reading this my Turkey Wings and Pork Shoulder will be thawing so that I can marinate them overnight. I'm Caribbean so our Thanksgiving table may look a little different from yours. Lol.

As I was thinking about what I wanted to write for my Thanksgiving post this year I kept coming back to focus. This year has been EXTRAORDINARY! There has been just so much that has gone on and is continuing to go on now as I type. I'm sure someone has tweeted something that is trending or posted something on Instagram or Tik Tok that has gone viral.

There has just been a lot of noise this year. And even though we have been home (at least I have) for the better part of 8 months, focus has been elusive.

Because of this noise many people have found it hard to be thankful this year and I can understand why. Holidays are usually our break from the noise and it just doesn't feel like that at this moment.

I've discovered that tuning out the noise and focusing on what your treasures are is a learned and practiced behavior. At the start of WFH and the pandemic I was constantly plugged into the noise online, in the news, social media to the point that my anxiety was high, I was scared out my mind and if you said "boo" I would have jumped out of my skin. After the first month I made the concious decision to stop watching the news and if I did go on social media (twitter is my social of choice) I avoided the trending topics.

Instead I sought to focus on my treasures, my family.

I focused on the blessing that my parents and my family are all in the same house. I didn't view that as a treasure until 2020. Lol. My kids get to see their grandparent everyday, a luxury many wish they had in this age of Zoom and one that I honestly took for granted.

I focused on the fact that I get to spend time with my kids in a way I never would have dreamed of before. I got to take them outside to play everyday all summer and fall. When I would get stressed I'd unplug and watch Blue's Clues or whatever show was on at the time and have a dance party.

I focused on the fact that my family and those around me have gone relatively unscathed by the virus. We are well and even though we have to go out we have remained safe and healthy.

Finally, I focused on the blessing of someone reaching out to me and offering me the opportunity to change my life and my family's life. My girl Renee introduced me to a world I didn't know existed but am so glad it found me. Seeing so many people, especially women, winning has been absolutely incredible. #GirlPower #FashionableFinance

But I has to focus in on those things. I had to look for good. I had to see the treasures in my life and then make that the main thing, otherwise I probably wouldn't be looking forward to Thanksgiving either.

But being bogged down in the negativity, though at times may be understandable, isn't living.

Thorton Wilder said,

We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are concious of our treasures.

My most ALIVE moments, when I'm most free, is when I am present for the laughter of my children. I can be at my desk working and I'll hear them giggling just totally free of all worries and cares. That levity elevates me and I hold on to it, so grateful that I have that joy to experience.

So today as you prepare for this holiday that doesn't feel like a holiday and you may not be the most thankful or festive try to focus on your treasures, whatever they are - from the joy of laughter to being connected through Zoom to a meal to that pair of fuzzy socks that now only cost $6 instead of $12 - focus on that and see how your mindset shifts.

Can you identify and focus on your treasures?
